As I understand it, there is no CARB price tag, it’s just illegal. If they’re titled and plated here, it’s as something else (240SX, Maxima, etc) with a bro-deal shady smog, or the title has been “laundered” through another state, also with a bro-deal shady smog. Or they found the shadiest DMV in the state, or registered it on a Native American reservation. That’s not just Skylines, anything 25 or older unless it has the Bill Gates 959 waiver.

Turns out someone in my car club knows that car. The emissions equipment to meet CARB is roughly $8k. That makes it practically illegal to anyone in CA hoping to own an old Skyline on the cheap.

Out the door it’s a $30+k car for Californians. Not the best deal.

I’m not an experienced project car guy like many on Oppo. I’m not accustomed to months-long downtime when something goes bad, but that has been mainly due to a backlogged shop that I will try to avoid from now on. I can’t stand not having my car available.

The old lore that you can’t escape the exotic mechanic for under $1000 also usually rings true. I’ve got the stomach, the funds and the permission for all the routine needs including the dreaded major service, but the other crap on the side that randomly breaks is also not cheap.

I remember when the little “T” shaped reverse selector on my 360 broke and the dealer quoted me somewhere in the $1,300 range to repair it. I pulled the F1 unit off, unscrewed 3 screws, found the broken piece which just so happened to click into place, ordered a new one online (still $185 part) and had it installed and back together in all of 10 minutes. So yes, I feel your pain on how much the little unexpected things can ‘hurt’.

Can you elaborate? I’d really like to know, because a buddy who owns a Cefiro, a RHD S13, and an R33 and a guy I know who imports European cars told me it’s impossible here now. I’d love to be wrong on that.

It needs to go to a CARB lab to have compliance done. Expensive but very much possible. No offense, but your friends are clueless
